Skip to the Good Stuff: FOUR Tips from Skip - Why Summer Is the Real Crunch Time for Federal Partners

Summer is here. The grills are fired up, beach trips are being planned, and if you are anything like me, you are trying to squeeze in a little time away. (In fairness, I just got back from a week at my beach condo.)

But if you work in the federal IT market, summer is definitely not the time to coast.

After 40 years in this industry, I can tell you that the vendors and partners who win at federal fiscal year-end do not suddenly get their act together in September. They start putting in the work during June, July, and August.

Why? Because September 30 is coming fast.

The federal fiscal year-end rush is essentially a high-stakes sprint. By the time September rolls around, agencies, vendors, partners, and contracting teams are all moving at full speed. And with no guarantee of what October 1 will bring, the time to get positioned is now.

So, how do you make sure your summer hustle turns into Q4 wins?

Here are FOUR tips to help you get ahead of the rush:

1. Get Ready for Budget Clarity

By mid-summer, agencies typically have a much clearer picture of where their budgets stand and what funding may still be available.

That means those vague conversations from earlier in the year can start turning into something more concrete. Potential projects become actual requirements. Plans become solicitations. And opportunities that once felt like "maybe" can suddenly become very real.

For partners, this is also the perfect time to clean up the pipeline.

Not every opportunity is going to make it to the finish line. Summer is your chance to separate the real opportunities from the distractions and focus your resources where they can actually make an impact.

2. Make Your Position Before the RFP Drops

Once an RFP hits the street, the window to influence the requirement gets a whole lot smaller.

Summer gives you something that September does not: time.

It is a chance to engage with technical buyers, understand what agencies are trying to accomplish, demonstrate your capabilities, and educate them on the solutions and procurement options available to them.

And let's be honest, getting an agency official's attention in July is a lot easier than trying to get on their calendar when everyone is scrambling to close out the fiscal year.

If you have something valuable to bring to the table, now is the time to make sure they know about it.

3. Prepare for the Q4 Surge Before It Starts

The federal fiscal year-end rush has a way of exposing every gap in your process.

Your team is busy. Your customers are busy. Your vendors are busy. Everyone suddenly needs something yesterday.

That is why preparation matters.

Get your SDRs and technical experts aligned. Make sure your contract teams are ready to move. Get pricing and vendor quotes squared away. Finalize teaming agreements before everyone's calendars fill up.

And take a hard look at your contract vehicles.

Make sure your GSA schedules, GWACs, and other key procurement vehicles are active and ready to support fast ordering when the opportunity comes.

The goal is simple: when the customer is ready to move, you should be ready to move faster.

4. Remember, the Clock Is Ticking

There is a reason September gets so crazy in the federal market.

The federal fiscal year ends September 30, and agencies are working to obligate remaining funds before the clock runs out.

That can create unexpected opportunities, including last-minute funding that suddenly becomes available. But those opportunities tend to move quickly.

If you are prepared, you can act.

If you are not, a missing document, outdated contract information, delayed quote, or technical issue can turn a nearly completed deal into a missed opportunity.

At that point, there is not much time left to fix it.

Limit the unforced errors.

The Bottom Line

If you want to maximize your Q4 revenue, your fiscal year-end preparation starts now, not in September.

Summer is your opportunity to get closer to customers, sharpen your pipeline, position your capabilities, prepare your teams, and make sure your contracts and partners are ready to move when the funding appears.

Yes, you should enjoy the beach. Yes, you should fire up the grill. But do not confuse summer with slow season.

Put in a little extra work now, and you will be in a much better position to hit the ground running when October rolls around.
